Chad McQueen in “Number One Fan” (1995) – feat. Hoyt Axton & Dean Norris
This is an official “Donald P. Borchers Production”.
After I lost my try for the rights to Stephen King’s “MISERY”, I had fan obsession on my mind. I couldn’t believe my good luck when Mark Kaplan introduced me to Tony Greene. He had a spec script that was almost in condition to shoot. I made a conditional offer subject to changing his original title to “NUMBER ONE FAN”.
“Number One Fan” (1995) is an American shestalker suspense thriller movie, directed by Jane Simpson (Music Video Director for Chaka Khan, E.L.O., Patti LaBelle, Enrique Iglesias, more), written by Anthony L. Greene (GARGOYLE), produced by Veteran B-Movie producer Donald P. Borchers (CHILDREN OF THE CORN), with music by Robert J. Walsh (THE NEW ADVENTURES OF RIN TIN TIN), costume design by Vincent Lapper, (REPOSSESSED), starring Chad McQueen (son of Steve McQueen), Catherine Mary Stewart (NIGHT OF THE COMET, THE LAST STARFIGHTER), and Renee Allman (THE STONED AGE). Borchers demonstrates his unparalleled affection for B movies by casting stalwart icons Dick Miller (GREMLINS), Paul Bartel (EATING RAOUL) and Mary Woronov (ROCK ‘N’ ROLL HIGH SCHOOL), as well as Hoyt Axton, Dean Norris, Charles Matthau, and Nina Blackwood, who all elevate a film above its standing. A certified 1990s obsessive-fan-turned-slasher thriller directed by a real life woman.
When Hollywood’s biggest action star, a hunk named Zane Barry (Chad McQueen), has an affair with a fan, Blair Madsen (Renee Ammann), he regrets it immediately and tries to hide it from his fiancée (Catherine Mary Stewart). But, the obsessive fan simply won’t give up, and resorts to murder to prove she’s this actor’s eponymous NUMBER ONE FAN. A good lesson on how not to handle the crime of being so hot and sexy that a woman will kill to date you.
At a party, Hollywood’s biggest action movie star, Zane Barry, (Chad McQueen), and one of his adoring public, Blair Madsen (Renee Allman), follows him in a bar, and they catch each other’s eye. Using her power of seduction, she attracts Zane to her hotel room where a night of intense passion ensues. She proves to be a sister of a childhood friend of Zane, and longtime fan from his hometown, and the next night she talks Zane into missing the premiere of Holly’s first film and sleeping with her again.
For Blair, it’s the beginning of a romance she’s dreamed about all her life, in the world of movie-making. But for Zane it’s a one-night stand with a gorgeous female fan, who incidentally is not his girlfriend. Mistakes like these happen if you’re a man falling prey to the cruel whims of a mischievous little tart, and what a hot little number she is.
Unfortunately for Blair, Zane’s about to marry his gorgeous costumer girlfriend, Holly (Catherine Mary Stewart). Zane regrets hooking up with Blair, and tries to hide it from his fiancée.
Assuming he’ll never see Blair again, Zane patches things up with Holly, but when he tries to end things, Blair has other ideas and accosts him in
his dressing room. His unbalanced obsessive young fan simply won’t give up, and resorts to murder to prove herself to Zane. When his manager, Scotty (Charles Matthau), goes to call security, Blair follows and strangles him.
When Blair discovers that the affair is over, Blair doesn’t even bother to pretend to not be an insane sex predator, and decides to turn Zane and Blair’s life into a living hell in the main story, about the stalking of an action star and his girlfriend.
As Blair’s obsession turns to violence, Zane’s life mirrors one of his action movies. There is a film within the film, which adds to the entertainment.
Stepping up her campaign to win Zane, Blair attacks Holly, who refuses to speak to Zane when he visits her in the hospital.
Blair then vandalizes his dressing room, kills a security guard there, and torches Zane’s car.
To make matters worse, Blair’s angry husband Billy (Mark Duke Dalton) turns up
and attacks Zane.
Zane must take matters into his own hands in order to overcome the final fury of his NUMBER ONE FAN. But the obsessive fan simply won’t give up.
Finally, Blair kidnaps Holly, threatening to kill her if Zane doesn’t meet her at the studio. Billy follows Zane there. During the resulting confrontation, a fire erupts, and Zane rescues Holly while Billy runs into the flames to save Blair. But Blair’s body is never recovered,
and the threat of her presence haunts Zane during his subsequent wedding to Holly.
First of only two feature films directed by Jane Simpson. Before this she directed commercials and music videos with her flair for the bizarre, such as evidenced in the scene where a bride gets beaten over the head with a mannequin.
Dean Norris (BREAKING BAD) makes a cameo appearance in this celebrity-stalker. Borchers previously cast Norris in Jailbait “1993”. As teenagers, both Borchers and Norris participated in Junior Achievement’s “Beyond Our Control” TV Series (1968–1986) for WNDU-TV in South Bend, Indiana, albeit at different times.
